Gun Control Debate Sparks Increase In Firearm Purchases, Education

CNN

Across the country, we're seeing a series of blows to gun control. In Chicago, gun owners will no longer have to register their firearms - putting an end to a policy that has tracked guns in the city for more than 40 years.

In Missouri, a controversial measure that would have prevented enforcement of federal gun laws nearly passed. A push to override the governor's veto fell just one vote short of approval in the state Senate.

And in Iowa, the legally blind can legally get a gun permit. State law says every Iowan has the right to carry a weapon - but what about safety?

CNN's Ted Rowlands is OutFront with the story.

Representatives from both sides of the gun control debate who talked to ABC 5 Tuesday said they could ever understand what it would be like to have an escaped felon in their home, threatening their family.

But this is a very rare case, and it doesn't mean that everyone with a gun in their hand would have been able to react the same way this homeowner did.

Both sides agree.  The owner of this home, Jerome Mauderly, did what he had to do to save his family.

"We absolutely support Americans rights to own guns for protection.  He lawfully owned the gun and used it in a way to protect himself and his family," Susan Brehm-Stecher with Moms Demand Action said.

"Great.  It's great to hear that finally the good is being seen.  There are many instances where firearms are used to protect people's lives," Iowa Firearms Instructor, Austin Henry with Equip 2 Conceal, said.

"We have seen a big increase since last fall after Obama took office," Shewmake said. "People are concerned their rights are going to be taken away from them."

ABC News Florida

"On a warm Florida evening last week, a Tampa woman's worst nightmare came true after she caught four men breaking into her home. Scared, she only wanted on thing: a weapon.

Unfortunately for our victim, she didn't have one. So we went along as as she learned how to better protect herself."

CBS News Florida

"Even though violent crime numbers are down across Central Florida, FBI statistics show Orange County leads the state in the number of rapes.

According to the latest numbers from the Sheriff's Department, there were 784 reported sex crimes in Orange County for 2008. So far this year, there have been 565 reported."

"...Why the sudden rush? Last spring Governor Culver signed a bill making Iowa a “shall-issue” state. The law goes into effect January 1, 2011. The change means anyone without a felony on their record will be permitted to carry a gun in public"
