Representatives from both sides of the gun control debate who talked to ABC 5 Tuesday said they could ever understand what it would be like to have an escaped felon in their home, threatening their family.

But this is a very rare case, and it doesn't mean that everyone with a gun in their hand would have been able to react the same way this homeowner did.

Both sides agree.  The owner of this home, Jerome Mauderly, did what he had to do to save his family.

"We absolutely support Americans rights to own guns for protection.  He lawfully owned the gun and used it in a way to protect himself and his family," Susan Brehm-Stecher with Moms Demand Action said.

"Great.  It's great to hear that finally the good is being seen.  There are many instances where firearms are used to protect people's lives," Iowa Firearms Instructor, Austin Henry with Equip 2 Conceal, said.
